Visiting South Africa’s Eastern Cape Game Reserves
During a recent visit to South Africa, Humboldt director Simon took time to explore the game reserves of the Eastern Cape and visit the best lodges.
Shamwari Private Game Reserve
Simon’s first stop was at the Shamwari Private Game Reserve, where he stayed at Long Lee Manor.
Shamwari, meaning “my friend” in Shona, spans 25,000 hectares of pristine wilderness. Established in 1992, the reserve has been at the forefront of conservation efforts in South Africa. The founders, Adrian Gardiner and the late Dr. Ian Player, envisioned a sanctuary where wildlife could thrive and ecosystems could be restored. Today, Shamwari is a shining example of successful conservation, having rehabilitated degraded land and reintroduced numerous species, including the Big Five: lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffaloes.
Shamwari Private Game Reserve offers a range of luxurious lodges, each providing a unique experience and stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Whether you prefer the elegance of Long Lee Manor, the tented camp experience at Explorer Camp, or the family-friendly environment of Riverdene, there’s something for everyone. These lodges combine modern comforts with authentic safari charm, ensuring a memorable and comfortable stay.
The lodges Sindile, Eagles Crag and Bayethe are their premium offerings with excellent design and spacious rooms.
One of the highlights of visiting Shamwari is the opportunity to witness Africa’s iconic wildlife up close. Guided by expert rangers, guests embark on thrilling game drives and walking safaris, exploring the diverse habitats that the reserve has to offer. From tracking elusive leopards to observing elephants at a waterhole, every moment is filled with excitement and wonder. The reserve is also home to several conservation projects, including the Born Free Big Cat Sanctuary, which rescues and rehabilitates big cats from around the world and also the VulPro centre which is reintroducing vultures to the region.
At Shamwari, game drives are led by just a guide (no tracker) in covered safari vehicles.
Shamwari’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond wildlife conservation. The reserve implements eco-friendly practices, such as solar power, water conservation, and waste recycling, to minimize its environmental footprint. Moreover, Shamwari actively engages with local communities, providing education, healthcare, and employment opportunities, thereby contributing to the socio-economic development of the region.
Whether you’re a seasoned safari-goer or a first-time visitor, Shamwari offers a range of activities to suit your interests as well as a spa offerings. In addition to game drives, guests can enjoy bird watching, photography safaris, and guided bush walks. For a more immersive experience, consider joining one of the reserve’s conservation programs, where you can participate in wildlife monitoring and research projects.
Shamwari Private Game Reserve is an excellent choice for families, offering specialized programs and activities for children. The Kids on Safari program introduces young explorers to the wonders of the African bush through educational and fun activities. With family-friendly lodges and dedicated guides, parents can relax and enjoy the safari experience, knowing their children are in safe and capable hands.
The range of lodges makes Shamwari an excellent option for most types of travellers.
Kwandwe Private Game Reserve
Simon’s next stop, nestled in the heart of South Africa’s Eastern Cape, was Kwandwe Private Game Reserve. The reserve offers a unique blend of luxury, adventure, and conservation. This hidden gem spans 54,000 acres of breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife, and rich cultural heritage, making it an ideal destination for travellers seeking an unforgettable safari experience.
Kwandwe, meaning “Place of the Blue Crane” in isiXhosa, is a sanctuary for one of South Africa’s most endangered birds, the blue crane. The reserve’s commitment to conservation is evident in its efforts to protect this species and its habitats. But Kwandwe is not just about cranes; it is home to the Big Five—lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo—along with a myriad of other wildlife species, including cheetahs, giraffes, and zebras.
Visitors to Kwandwe can choose from a range of luxurious accommodations, each designed to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. The reserve offers four distinct lodges and villas, each providing a unique experience:
Simon stayed at Ecca Lodge which is known for its modern, vibrant design and stunning views of the African bushveld. The suites are spacious, superbly designed and come with private plunge pools and all the amenities of a luxury safari lodge. It is perfect for couples, families and groups.
Great Fish River Lodge is perched along the banks of the Great Fish River, this lodge provides a more traditional safari experience. Its thatched roofs and earthy tones create an atmosphere of rustic elegance. Honeymooners love it.
There are also private homes to rent if you are bringing a group of friends or a planning a multi-generational family safari. Uplands Homestead is a beautifully restored 1905 farmhouse. It offers an exclusive-use experience, complete with a dedicated team of staff to cater to your every need. While Melton Manor is an intimate, contemporary safari villa designed for families and small groups, Melton Manor features four suites and a central courtyard with a swimming pool.
Of all the lodges Simon visited, the best ones were located in Kwandwe.
Kwandwe offers a range of activities designed to immerse guests in the wild beauty of the African bush. Guided game drives, led by experienced rangers and trackers, provide close encounters with the reserve’s diverse wildlife. For a more intimate experience, guests can embark on walking safaris, which offer a chance to explore the bush on foot and learn about the smaller details of the ecosystem.
Night drives are also available, allowing visitors to witness the nocturnal activities of the reserve’s inhabitants. Birdwatching enthusiasts will delight in the over 300 bird species that call Kwandwe home, including the endangered blue crane.
Kwandwe is deeply committed to conservation and community development. The reserve’s conservation initiatives include rhino and elephant protection programs, habitat restoration, and anti-poaching efforts. Guests can participate in conservation activities, such as tracking and monitoring wildlife, providing a hands-on opportunity to contribute to these vital efforts.
Kwandwe also focuses on uplifting the local community through education and employment opportunities. The reserve supports various community projects, including schools and healthcare facilities, ensuring that tourism benefits both the environment and the people.
Sustainability is at the core of Kwandwe’s operations. The reserve employs eco-friendly practices, such as solar power, water conservation, and waste management, to minimize its environmental impact. By choosing Kwandwe, guests support a destination that prioritizes the preservation of nature for future generations.
Kwandwe Private Game Reserve is more than just a safari destination; it is a haven for wildlife, a champion of conservation, and a beacon of luxury in the African wilderness. Whether you’re seeking thrilling wildlife encounters, luxurious accommodations, or a chance to make a positive impact, Kwandwe offers an unforgettable experience that will leave you with memories to last a lifetime. Kariega Private Game Reserve
Nestled close to the Southern Ocean, the Kariega Private Game Reserve offers an unforgettable safari experience, combining luxury with the raw beauty of the African wilderness plus some views of the sea! This family-owned and operated reserve spans 10,000 hectares of diverse ecosystems, from rolling hills and riverine forests to expansive savannas and bushveld. It’s a paradise for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts alike, offering a unique blend of adventure, relaxation, and conservation.
Kariega is renowned for its commitment to conservation and its success in protecting a wide variety of wildlife. The reserve is home to the Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffalos, offering guests a chance to witness these majestic animals in their natural habitat. Beyond the Big Five, visitors can also encounter an array of other species, including giraffes, zebras, hippos, and over 280 species of birds.
The reserve’s conservation efforts are particularly noteworthy. Kariega actively participates in anti-poaching initiatives and is involved in several conservation projects aimed at protecting endangered species. This dedication not only ensures the survival of these incredible animals but also provides guests with an opportunity to learn about and support these vital efforts.
Kariega Private Game Reserve offers a range of accommodations designed to cater to different tastes and preferences. From the entry level Main Lodge with its stunning views and family-friendly atmosphere to the secluded Ukhozi Lodge, each option provides a unique experience.
The top lodge on the property is Settlers Drift which features nine spacious tented suites, each with a private deck offering stunning views of the surrounding bush and the Bushman’s River. The suites are designed with a contemporary style, providing luxurious amenities such as air conditioning, en-suite bathrooms, indoor and outdoor showers, and a well-stocked mini-bar.

Each lodge is meticulously designed to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings, offering comfort without compromising on the authenticity of the safari experience. Guests can enjoy spacious suites with private decks, plunge pools, and panoramic views of the reserve.
The heart of the Kariega experience is, of course, the safari. Expert guides lead twice-daily game drives in open vehicles, providing thrilling opportunities to see wildlife up close. Whether it’s tracking a pride of lions on the hunt, watching elephants play in the river, or spotting a shy leopard lounging in a tree, each game drive is a new adventure.
At time of writing there are 6 lions in the game reserve, 2 males and 4 females and Simon managed to spot all 6 which he was there plus cheetahs and a variety of other wildlife. Unlike the other two lodges it was very easy to get up close to giraffes and there are about 120 of these on the reserve.
Like Shamwari, the game drives are conducted by just a guide and without an additional trackers, due to the landscapes.
In addition to game drives, Kariega offers guided bush walks, providing a more intimate and immersive experience of the African wilderness. These walks allow guests to learn about the smaller details of the ecosystem, from medicinal plants to the intricate behaviours of insects and birds.
For a different perspective, guests can embark on a river cruise along the Bushmans River. This tranquil experience offers stunning scenery and the chance to see hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of birdlife from the water.
The reserve works closely with local communities, providing employment opportunities, supporting local schools, and promoting sustainable tourism practices. By visiting Kariega, guests contribute directly to these initiatives, ensuring that their stay has a positive impact on both the environment and the local community.
Simon’s impressions
Simon had visited a number of game reserves in South Africa and whether you’re a seasoned safari-goer or a first-time visitor, the Eastern Cape Reserves offer an unforgettable experience that will leave you with memories to cherish for a lifetime. The terrain is very hilly and rocky, unlike Sabi Sands or the Kruger for example, so wildlife isn’t as easy to find but makes it more of an adventure and Simon had some incredible sightings. The proximity of the lodges to Port Elizabeth makes it an incredibly easy destination to add on to a self drive trip from Cape Town.
