Costa Rica offers a wide range of landscapes and experiences, from tropical beaches to misty cloud forests and active volcanoes. Ten days is enough for a well-paced trip focusing on two destinations, such as Arenal and the Pacific Coast. If you want to explore more of the country’s biodiversity and natural beauty, two or more weeks is ideal. This allows time to combine wildlife-rich rainforests, hot springs, highland coffee regions and either Pacific or Caribbean beaches (or both) without feeling rushed. Travel by road can take time due to winding routes and variable conditions, though short domestic flights are available between some areas.

Costa Rica works beautifully as a standalone destination, and we often recommend focusing your time here to enjoy the incredible diversity without too much travel. However, if you’re planning a longer trip, Costa Rica can also pair well with nearby countries such as Belize, Guatemala or Mexico for a broader Central American journey. For those combining it with South America, Costa Rica can be a great soft landing or relaxing finish after more intensive travel in countries like Peru or Colombia, especially with direct flights linking key hubs.

Costa Rica is visa-free for many nationalities, including those from the UK, EU, US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, for stays of up to 90 days. For other passport holders, a visa may be required in advance. Travellers should also ensure their passport is valid for at least three months beyond their planned departure date. As entry requirements can change, we recommend checking with your nearest Costa Rican consulate or embassy before travel.

There are no compulsory vaccinations for most travellers entering Costa Rica, unless you’re arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission, in which case proof of yellow fever vaccination is required. Routine vaccines such as tetanus, MMR, hepatitis A, and typhoid are recommended. Some travellers visiting rural or jungle areas may consider malaria prevention or vaccines for hepatitis B or rabies, depending on their itinerary. It’s best to consult a travel clinic four to six weeks before departure to receive advice tailored to your plans.

Costa Rica is considered one of the safest countries in Central America, with a well-established tourism infrastructure and a welcoming atmosphere. Petty crime such as pickpocketing can occur, particularly in busy areas or on public transport, but violent crime is rare in tourist zones. Road conditions can vary, especially in rural areas or during the rainy season, so using a private driver or transfers through trusted providers is advised for comfort and safety. Most travellers find Costa Rica to be friendly, easygoing, and refreshingly peaceful.
