Belize

Dive into a hidden paradise where jungle mysteries meet turquoise dreams.

Belize is famous for its Caribbean beaches and azure waters, but it has much more to offer the luxury traveller. The mix of Latin and Caribbean cultures is a delightful one and creates a laidback vibe with a warm welcome to anyone visiting the country. Its size means that it is easy to explore and with everything on offer from beaches to jungle, to Mayan ruins, to spectacular diving, visitors can enjoy a relaxing and diverse holiday in this little slice of paradise.

The main language spoken in the country is English, but the Belize of today is a fascinating melting pot of cultures including Mayan, Mestizo, Creole and Garifuna. Visiting Belize is a chance to experience the varied cuisine and customs and a fabulously warm welcome. Indigenous Mayan, Creole and Garifuna culture all have a strong presence in this country, making Belize a perfect destination for anyone interested in people and culture.

History and archaeology are a definite highlight in Belize with an abundance of Mayan ruins on offer. Visitors can visit them on a basic tour or perhaps enjoy a hike or horseback riding to explore some of them. In fact, Belize has a lot to entice the active traveller with jungle hikes, cave explorations, zip lining, kayaking and exciting water sports with diving at the top of the list.

For wildlife, Belize is a great choice. There are hundreds of species of birds to spot along with iguanas, monkeys, many fish and marine animals in the reefs and, if you are very lucky, the elusive jaguar.

If you are looking for idyllic beaches and laidback luxury, then this country is the one for you. Belize has wonderful beaches from the southern coast around Placencia and Dangriga to the many cayes and atolls which include several private islands for those looking for something more exclusive.

The taste that stayed with me…

“There’s nothing like fresh seafood in Belize. I tried a fish conch dish at a little seaside shack, and it was a revelation; juicy, tender and packed with flavours you can only get straight from the Caribbean.

I ended up lingering over the meal, watching the sun sink into the water and feeling completely relaxed.”

FAQs

Belize is a compact country, so it’s perfect for travellers who want a rich experience in a relatively short amount of time. A week is ideal for a beach or diving holiday or a short adventure in the rainforest. With 10 – 14 days, you can combine inland highlights like the jungle lodges of the Cayo District and Mayan ruins, with time on the coast or islands, such as Ambergris Caye or Placencia. It’s easy to create a balanced itinerary of nature, culture and relaxation without spending too much time travelling.

Belize borders Mexico and Guatemala, and both make excellent pairings. Many travellers combine Belize with the Yucatán Peninsula (Cancún, Tulum, or Mérida), or head into Guatemala to visit Tikal, one of the most impressive Mayan archaeological sites. For those with more time, you can even link Belize into a longer Central American journey through Costa Rica, often with short regional flights.

Visa requirements for Belize vary by nationality. UK, EU, US, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passport holders currently do not need a visa for stays of up to 30 or 90 days, depending on your passport. Other nationalities may require a visa or special permit. We recommend checking with your local Belizean consulate before you travel to ensure you have the latest information.

There are no mandatory vaccinations for Belize, but some are strongly recommended. Hepatitis A, typhoid, tetanus and MMR are advised for most travellers. A yellow fever vaccination is required only if you’re arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission. Malaria risk is low but may be present in some remote inland areas. A travel health clinic can provide advice tailored to your route. It’s best to consult a doctor 4 – 6 weeks before travel.

Belize is generally safe, especially in tourist areas, lodges and islands. Most visits are trouble-free. Exercise normal travel precautions: keep valuables out of sight and follow local advice. In nature reserves or remote areas, safety risks are minimal and locals are typically welcoming and helpful.
