When to Visit South Africa
South Africa is a year-round destination, with different regions peaking at different times. The dry winter months of May to September are the great time to visit for safaris, when game viewing is at its best, while the summer months of November to March are the great time for Cape Town, the Garden Route, beaches and the Winelands. April and October are good shoulder months, bringing generally pleasant conditions and fewer crowds.

South Africa is a large and varied country with an incredible range of experiences, from wildlife safaris and wine country to cosmopolitan cities and scenic coastlines. A well-rounded itinerary should allow for 10 to 14 days, especially if you wish to combine areas like Cape Town, the Winelands, the Garden Route and a private game reserve such as those in Kruger or the Eastern Cape. For a more in-depth exploration, two to three weeks gives time to discover hidden gems like the Drakensberg Mountains, KwaZulu-Natal or Madikwe.
South Africa is often a standalone destination, offering immense variety in one trip. However, it pairs well with nearby countries such as Zimbabwe or Zambia to visit Victoria Falls, or Botswana for a contrasting safari experience in the Okavango Delta or Chobe National Park. Direct flights from South Africa also connect easily to Mozambique and Mauritius, ideal for a post-safari beach break.
Visa requirements depend on your nationality. UK, EU, US, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passport holders currently do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. Other nationalities may need to apply for a visa in advance. Entry requirements can change, so we recommend checking with your nearest South African embassy or consulate before travel to ensure you’re up to date.
There are no mandatory vaccinations for most travellers entering South Africa, but routine immunisations such as MMR, tetanus, hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended. If you’re arriving from a country with a yellow fever risk, you will need to show proof of yellow fever vaccination. Malaria is present in some parts of the country, particularly in Kruger National Park and northern areas, so anti-malarial medication may be advised. Speak to your travel clinic 4 to 6 weeks before travel for personalised guidance.
South Africa is a popular destination with a well-developed tourism infrastructure. While some areas have higher crime rates, these are usually far from tourist routes. Visitors who travel with reputable guides, stay in established lodges and follow local advice typically feel safe and well cared for. In cities, it’s best to take common-sense precautions such as avoiding walking alone at night, using guided transfers and being discreet with valuables.
