Antigua Guatemala, the old capital, is one of Latin America’s finest colonial cities. Spend a few days soaking up its relaxed vibe, wandering cobbled streets past pastel buildings, shopping for handicrafts, and sampling local coffee or some of the world’s best rum.
Lake Atitlán is a shimmering jewel surrounded by towering volcanoes and dotted with traditional villages. Sail across the lake, passing fishermen in dugout canoes to visit towns known for weaving, embroidery, coffee, and handicrafts.
Guatemala is also home to several significant Mayan sites, the most famous being Tikal. Walk through thick jungle, spotting monkeys and toucans, to reach soaring pyramids and temples that rise above the canopy – an unforgettable experience. The humid jungle here contrasts sharply with the cooler highlands and volcanic landscapes. Iximche, though more modest, is still worth a visit. It remains an active ceremonial site for modern indigenous communities.

A week in Guatemala is enough to get a feel for the country’s rich culture and natural beauty, especially if you focus on two or three key destinations such as Antigua, Lake Atitlán, and Tikal. For a more in-depth experience, including time to explore local markets, Mayan ruins, cloud forests and highland villages, we recommend 10 to 14 days. Travel between regions can be slow due to mountainous roads, so a well-paced itinerary helps ensure a more relaxed experience.
Guatemala pairs naturally with Belize. The two countries complement each other beautifully, Guatemala offers rich culture, colonial cities and Mayan ruins like Tikal, while Belize adds Caribbean beaches, coral reefs, and laid-back coastal towns. Overland travel or short flights make the connection straightforward, particularly between Tikal and San Ignacio or Flores and Belize City. Guatemala can also be linked with Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. For longer Latin American journeys, Guatemala can serve as a rich cultural stop before or after travel in countries like Costa Rica, Ecuador or Colombia.
Travellers from many countries, including the UK, US, EU, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, do not need a visa to enter Guatemala for stays of up to 90 days. Passports must be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. Entry requirements can change, so it’s always best to check with your nearest Guatemalan embassy or consulate before travelling.
There are no mandatory vaccinations for entry into Guatemala for most travellers, but routine vaccinations such as MMR, tetanus, hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended. If you’re planning to visit remote rural areas, additional precautions such as the yellow fever vaccine (if arriving from a high-risk country), hepatitis B, or rabies may be advised.
