Peru’s stunning Sacred Valley is an unmissable stop on any first-timer’s trip to this colourful Andean nation. The striking scenery of snow-capped mountains and rolling green valleys combined with the uniquely well-preserved traditional cultures that thrive in this region make it a favourite for visitors. Sol y Luna is one of our favourite luxury offerings in this region with exceptional cuisine, characterful accommodations and fabulous on-site facilities.
Unique, isolated and breath-taking: the Sacred Valley of the Incas is a must-see during your luxury holiday to Peru and there is no better base from which to explore this spectacular region than the exquisite Sol y Luna Lodge in the Urubamba Valley. This charming Relais & Chateaux property combines the best of modern luxury with bundles of local character and fine decorative furnishings that evoke the Sacred Valley‘s centuries-long heritage of craftsmanship. With its refined take on traditional Peruvian cuisine, an indulgent spa and its blissful seclusion amongst fabulous gardens; Sol y Luna is the perfect place to slow down, relax and enjoy the finest Peruvian hospitality.
How to Get There
The Sacred Valley is approximately a one hour and a half’s drive from Cusco airport (CUZ). International flights arrive into Cusco from Bogotá, La Paz and Santiago de Chile. The airport is also serviced multiple times a day from Lima and other regional Peruvian ports.
Sol y Luna consists of 43 stand-alone casitas (‘little houses’) built from locally-sourced materials such as terracotta and adobe. The rooms are finished with plenty of authentic Peruvian character and feature colourful textiles and objets d’art that pay homage to the immense cultural heritage of the region.
Food & Drink
Sol y Luna bears the Relais & Chateaux mark, guaranteeing guests a gastronomical experience of an exceptionally high standard. The hotel offers two restaurants on-site. Killa Wasi offers contemporary reimaginations of rustic Sacred Valley dishes and refined versions of typically ‘cusqueña’ cuisine using ingredients sourced from local farms and the bountiful Peruvian Amazon, whilst Wayra (which is open to the public) offers a more relaxed dining experience of nourishing local dishes made from organic seasonal produce.
Centred around an ethos of promoting luxury travel for a purpose; social responsibility is at the heart of Sol y Luna’s operations. The hotel’s foundation funds a local school which works to provide the children of the Sacred Valley with a good education and increased opportunities. A stay at Sol y Luna gives back to the community and it is something the hotel are rightly proud of.
Those who want to use their stay in the Sacred Valley for a bit of downtime. Sol y Luna is within easy distance of many iconic Sacred Valley attractions; however, it also offers 25 acres of verdant private gardens where guests are free to wander and enjoy the exotic range of flora and birdlife native to the region. The hotel also offers a large outdoor pool with mountain views: it is the perfect place to explore and to unwind.
Must Do Activity
The hotel offers a wide range of adventurous activities for guests looking to go beyond the standard Sacred Valley ruins tours, such as kayaking a mountain lagoon, mountain biking trails and ATV tours. Sol y Luna also operates a range of scenic horse-riding routes using their gorgeous Peruvian Paso horses, famous for their smooth gait. Exploring the Sacred Valley’s dramatic scenery on one of these elegant beasts is an absolute must-do.
