CHIANG MAI

The capital of the cultural north, Chiang Mai is a delightful contrast to the bustle of Bangkok. Visit for its many Buddhist temples and access to the hill tribes and elephants of northern Thailand.

This university city has a charming atmosphere and is without doubt the city of temples. Some of the most striking include Chedi Luang, Chiang Mun and Phrasingh with strong architectural influences from Lanna Thai and Burma.  A short way out of town, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is an important sacred site for many Thai people and one of the most spectacular temples in Chiang Mai. The steep climb up 290 steps is worth it for the panoramic views once you reach the top.  Out of town and 290 steep steps, or a popular cable car journey later, Wat Phra atop Doi Sutherp Mountain is a spectacular temple in its own right and very rewarding for the panoramic views alone.

Beyond the temples, Chiang Mai’s night bazaar is a delightfully lively place full of handicrafts, antiques and plenty of kitsch. Wander the stalls enjoying the atmosphere of this bustling market and stopping to sample some delicacies from the street vendors.

Out of the city, the landscape here is rural and beautiful. Activities on offer include trekking, white water rafting or cycling through hillside villages. For those wishing to encounter elephants, we have made sure we work only with the most ethical responsible so you can view these magnificent beasts in the most respectful way.

One of the highlights of this region is a visit to the Thai and Burmese hill tribes. Once again, we make sure to work with the most ethical organisations, ensuring you have a conscious and respectful visit to these warm and welcoming communities.
