LAKE KIVU

Relax on the banks of one of Africa’s most beautiful great lakes.

Lake Kivu is a particularly special part of Rwanda. Running for nearly 100km along the border with the DRC, it is reaches down 480m at its deepest point. This depth means that the colours of the lake are spectacular, and the aquamarine waters are always enticing.  Along the banks you will find pretty villages worth exploring or the bustling town of Gisenyi which makes a great starting point for boat trips if you want to get out onto the water.

The white sandy shoreline is perfect for relaxing if you want an alternative beach experience. The water is warm enough for swimming and there are a variety of other activities on offer including canoeing and fishing. Lake Kivu’s proximity to Volcanoes National Park and the Virunga conservation area means that it makes a perfect addition to a Rwanda safari holiday and an ideal place to relax after trekking in search of gorillas and other amazing wildlife.
