TIKAL

Tikal is without doubt one of the most impressive Mayan sites in Central America and a must visit on a holiday to Guatemala.

This ancient citadel with its towering pyramids is hidden deep in the thick jungle and it is this location that makes the place so captivating.  This UNESCO national park is found in Petén region in the north of Guatemala and is a hot and steamy contrast to the Mayan lowlands and colonial beauty of Antigua. Your visit to Tikal is enhanced by the trek through the jungle, spotting not just Mayan ruins but maybe monkeys and exotic birds along the way. Tikal is located close to the border with Belize which makes this part of Guatemala the perfect crossing point for the two countries.

The gateway to this region is the town of Flores, a small community on an island on Lake Peten Itza. This beautiful lake does much to enhance your visit to this part of Guatemala and is a captivating site all of its own. Several of our favourite hotels in this region are located on the shores of the lake and nothing is better than returning to your lodge after a day of trekking round Tikal to a blissful cocktail as you watch the sun set over this beautiful part of Guatemala. For history, nature and beauty, Tikal and Lake Peten Itza are without doubt two of the best spots in this forever enchanting country.
