ANTIGUA

Surrounded by three grand volcanoes, Antigua Guatemala captivates you on arrival and stays with you long after you have left.

Antigua is one of the world’s most beautiful colonial cities and a real highlight of Guatemala. It is impossible not to fall in love with this beguiling city of pastel facades, cobbled streets and pretty parks. The city has World Heritage listed status which beautifully restricts any modern buildings and perpetuates the traditional atmosphere.

The vibe in Antigua is definitely a laidback one. Wander the streets, stopping for a coffee or to watch the hawkers go about their business in the Parque Central. Guatemala makes the best rum in the world so a visit to the Casa del Ron is essential for some tastings. There are many fine examples of Baroque churches here and they are fascinating places to observe how the colonial has intertwined with the Mayan indigenous beliefs. For shopping, there are many exquisite traditional textiles, jewellery and the jade for which Guatemala is known.  Outside the city there are opportunities for day trips to Mayan communities for a glimpse of this fascinating indigenous culture which is so important in Guatemala today or coffee plantations to learn how it is grown and produced and pick up a few bags to take home. If you are looking for something a little more active, why not head for a trek up one of the volcanoes?
