A self-drive adventure through Namibia’s deserts, coastlines, ancient landscapes and wildlife reserves.
This itinerary reveals the incredible diversity of Namibia, combining vast desert landscapes, rugged coastlines, ancient cultural sites and exceptional wildlife experiences into one unforgettable self-drive journey.
Begin in the heart of the Namib Desert at Kwessi Dunes, set within the private NamibRand Nature Reserve. Here, endless dunes, open plains and some of the darkest skies on Earth create a spectacular introduction to Namibia’s remote wilderness. Explore the desert landscapes by day and experience extraordinary stargazing by night, surrounded by complete tranquillity.
Continue to the Atlantic coast and the charming town of Swakopmund, where dramatic desert scenery meets the ocean. From here, venture into Sandwich Harbour, where towering dunes rise directly from the shoreline in one of Namibia’s most striking landscapes. The journey then continues inland to Damaraland, a region of ancient valleys, granite mountains and remarkable geological formations. Stay at Mowani Mountain Camp and discover the area’s rich heritage, including the UNESCO-listed rock engravings of Twyfelfontein and the possibility of spotting desert-adapted wildlife.
The itinerary then moves into Namibia’s renowned safari regions, beginning with Ongava Private Game Reserve on the edge of Etosha National Park. Enjoy exceptional wildlife encounters, with opportunities to see rhino, elephant, lion and other iconic species across this protected wilderness. Finish at Okonjima, home to the AfriCat Foundation, where expert-led leopard tracking offers a unique insight into Namibia’s conservation efforts and the elusive predators that call this landscape home.

The best time for this itinerary is May to October, during Namibia’s dry season, when cooler temperatures, clear skies and excellent wildlife viewing conditions make it ideal for exploring the desert and national parks. The itinerary is possible year-round, with November to April offering greener landscapes, migratory birds and newborn wildlife, although remote roads may be more challenging after heavy rains.
Our adventure through Namibia was everything we hoped for and more. The Humboldt Team took all the hassle out of booking and all we had to do was sit back and enjoy.
