Matobo Hills National Park

Matobo Hills (known locally as Matopos) is one of Zimbabwe’s most extraordinary landscapes. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape of sweeping granite kopjes, balancing boulders and wooded valleys. This region’s dramatic terrain was formed over more than two billion years, shaped by natural forces into surreal rock structures that rise above the surrounding plains, making it unlike any other destination in the country.

Matobo is equally celebrated for its rich human heritage. The hills host one of the highest concentrations of prehistoric rock art in southern Africa, with thousands of San (Bushmen) paintings tucked within caves and shelters that chronicle daily life, spiritual beliefs and hunting traditions spanning millennia. These evocative artworks provide a rare window into early human cultures and their deep connection to this landscape.

Beyond its archaeological treasures, the area holds profound cultural significance for local communities who continue to honour sacred sites and ancestral shrines among the boulders. The landscape also supports remarkable biodiversity, from elusive leopards and abundant birdlife, including the world’s highest concentration of breeding black eagles, as well as rhino tracking opportunities in the park’s protected areas.
