A land of roaring waterfalls, golden plains and thrilling safari adventures.
Zimbabwe is a land of dramatic beauty, with ancient landscapes and powerful rivers which create one of Africa’s most captivating destinations. At its heart lies the iconic Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya “The Smoke That Thunders”, a breathtaking curtain of cascading water that plunges into the Zambezi Gorge below. Mist rises high into the sky, rainbows shimmer in the sunlight, and the sheer force of nature leaves you in awe. Beyond the falls, Zimbabwe unfolds into a country of vast savannahs, rugged mountains, tranquil lakes and winding rivers, offering an extraordinary variety of scenery.
The wildlife experiences in Zimbabwe are truly exceptional. The country is home to some of Africa’s most pristine national parks, including Hwange National Park, renowned for its large elephant herds and diverse predator populations. Game drives here reveal lions, leopards, buffalo, giraffes and a wealth of birdlife, while Mana Pools National Park offers an entirely different safari experience along the Zambezi River. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for its walking safaris, where you can track wildlife on foot and witness elephants standing on their hind legs to feed from ancient trees.
Zimbabwe’s cultural heritage is just as compelling as its wildlife. The ancient stone ruins of Great Zimbabwe stand as a powerful reminder of a once-flourishing civilisation and give the country its name. Exploring this remarkable archaeological site offers insight into the region’s rich history and enduring traditions. Across the country, warm and welcoming communities invite visitors to experience local life, from bustling markets to rural villages, where music, storytelling and traditional dance bring Zimbabwean culture vividly to life.
Whether you’re seeking thrilling safari encounters, awe-inspiring natural wonders or meaningful cultural connections, Zimbabwe delivers an unforgettable journey at every turn. From sunrise game drives to sunset cruises on the Zambezi, your adventure in Zimbabwe will be filled with moments that stay with you long after you return home.
Zimbabwe offers outstanding wildlife experiences. Parks such as Hwange and Mana Pools are home to large elephant herds, lions, leopards, buffalo and wild dogs. Along the Zambezi River, hippos and crocodiles thrive, while hundreds of bird species fill the skies and riverbanks with colour.
From the mighty Victoria Falls to dramatic rock formations, Zimbabwe’s landscapes are truly spectacular. Beyond the falls, Matobo Hills, tranquil lakes and sweeping savannahs create breathtaking scenery for adventure, photography and peaceful moments in nature.
Zimbabwe’s heritage is shaped by ancient traditions and history. The ruins of Great Zimbabwe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reveal the story of a powerful medieval kingdom. Across the country, communities celebrate their culture through music, dance and crafts, with village visits offering insight into everyday life and age-old traditions.
The best time to visit Zimbabwe is during the dry season, from May to October. During these months, rainfall is minimal, rivers and waterholes are lower, and wildlife congregates around permanent water sources, making it ideal for safaris. Victoria Falls is spectacular at this time, with slightly lower water levels offering better visibility for photography.
The green season (November to April) brings warmer temperatures and heavy rains, which can make some roads and parks less accessible. However, this period also offers lush landscapes, fewer tourists, and excellent birdwatching, as migratory species arrive and animals give birth.
The Humboldt team’s Zimbabwe highlights
“Zimbabwean cuisine is wonderfully hearty, and one of my favourite meals was enjoying traditional sadza with slow-cooked game meat at a safari lodge in Hwange National Park sitting around the fire as the sun set.”

“To truly connect with Zimbabwe’s heritage, I recommend visiting the local villages around Matobo Hills. Meeting community elders, learning about ancient rock art and hearing stories passed down through generations offers a fascinating insight into the country’s deep cultural roots.

“One of the most exhilarating ways to explore Zimbabwe is on a walking safari in Mana Pools. Tracking elephants on foot along the Zambezi River, with nothing but your guide and the sounds of nature around you, is a raw and unforgettable wildlife experience.”

A stay of seven to ten days allows you to experience Zimbabwe’s iconic highlights without feeling rushed, from the mighty Victoria Falls to wildlife safaris in Hwange and the walking and canoe experiences of Mana Pools. With ten to fourteen days, you can explore multiple regions at a relaxed pace, add cultural visits and natural landscapes like Matobo Hills, and enjoy both adventure and leisure.
Zimbabwe can be combined with several neighbouring destinations for a multi-country African adventure. Popular combinations include Zambia (especially Victoria Falls from the Zambian side and Lower Zambezi National Park), Botswana (for the Okavango Delta and Moremi), and Namibia (for desert landscapes). Each offers distinct wildlife and landscapes that complement Zimbabwe’s dramatic scenery and safari experiences.
Many nationalities, including travellers from the UK, EU, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, require a visa to enter Zimbabwe. Visas are typically available on arrival or online before travel (e-visa), and your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date. Requirements can change, so it’s best to check the latest entry rules well before departure.
No specific vaccinations are legally required for entry to Zimbabwe, but routine immunisations should be up to date. Yellow fever vaccination may be required if you are arriving from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Many travellers also choose hepatitis A, typhoid and tetanus shots, and malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for most safari areas. Consult a travel health clinic four to six weeks before travel for personalised advice.
Zimbabwe is generally considered safe for travellers, especially at established safari lodges, national parks and tourist hubs like Victoria Falls. Petty crime can occur in urban areas, so standard precautions such as securing valuables and avoiding isolated areas at night are advised. Respect local customs, follow guidance from lodge staff and guides, and exercise care around wildlife and rivers for a safe and enriching journey.
