Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu National Park is Sri Lanka’s oldest and largest national park, reopened in 2010 after nearly three decades of closure during the civil war. It is one of the best places in the country to spot the elusive leopard and the shy sloth bear. Larger animals such as elephants, jackals, mugger crocodiles, sambar, spotted deer and buffalo are also seen regularly, adding to the park’s wild charm.

Visitors can take a mid-day excursion to Kudurumalai point along the Wilpattu coastline, believed to be where Prince Vijaya and the first Indian settlers first set foot in Sri Lanka. The area is defined by steep cliffs and fossilised limestone formations, offering panoramic views of the Indian Ocean that stretch to the horizon.

Wilpattu is also a haven for birdwatchers, particularly in the winter months, with over 200 species recorded. Raptors such as Crested Serpent, Changeable Hawk and White-bellied Sea Eagles patrol the skies, while the Brown Fish Owl, Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, Sri Lanka Junglefowl and Sri Lanka Woodshrike inhabit the forests. Around the park’s villus, water birds and waders gather along the edges, creating a rich and varied wildlife experience in every corner of the park.
