Kumana & Arugam Bay

Kumana, a protected reserve of lagoons, wetlands and scrub forest, is one of the island’s premier bird sanctuaries. During the nesting season, thousands of migratory birds gather here, from painted storks and spoonbills to herons and pelicans, creating a spectacle of sound and movement. The park is also home to elephants, jackals and leopards, its quiet landscapes offering an unhurried glimpse of Sri Lanka’s wild side.

Just to the north lies Arugam Bay, a laid-back coastal town with sweeping sandy beaches and some of the world’s best surf breaks.
