OMAN’S COASTLINE

Oman is well-known for its stunning beaches and for good reason.

Starting around Muscat itself, there are numerous opportunities to visit pristine sandy beaches and relax in idyllic surroundings. In the far south of the country, the subtropical city of Salalah is a gorgeous combination of green vegetation, emerald waterfalls and banana plantations. Add to this the coconut-fringed beaches and it is a true tropical paradise. During monsoon season, late June to early September, Salalah is transformed into an oasis with verdant grasses and roaring waterfalls. The city itself has much to offer including palaces, museums and parks. Head to the Museum of Frankincense to learn about the city’s history of trade in Frankincense and perfume.

Head further north to the city of Sur, a centuries-old trading centre and known for its dhow-building industry. A visit to the shipyard is a highlight of any visit to Sur and visitors can watch the boats being constructed on the beach in a process that can last up to a year. Nearby Ras al Jinz is home to the greenback turtle conservation centre, the first of its kind and complete with a dedicated research centre. Here, you can witness the rare sight of a mother turtle’s birthing process and maybe even see the baby turtles take their first tentative steps towards the ocean.

In the far north is the spectacular Musandam Peninsula. Separated from the rest of Oman by the United Arab Emirates, it is known for its magnificent fjords and exceptional diving and snorkelling – some of the best in the world. Explore on a traditional dhow cruise, visit local villages and encounter the semi-nomadic Shihuh tribe, this is a remarkable and remote part of Oman.
