Kerala is a beautiful mix of verdant mountains, tropical beaches and peaceful waterways. The Western Ghats rise in the east, and the Arabian Sea borders the west. Winding through the lush landscape are the famous backwaters framed by paddy fields and coconut groves. One of the best ways to explore is by houseboat. As you sail past charming villages, children smile and wave, and you dine on delicious food prepared onboard. Sunsets over the water are particularly memorable.

Kerala’s cuisine is among India’s finest. The state has long been an important stop on ancient trade routes, attracting merchants from Arabia, Greece and Rome in search of pepper, cardamom and ginger. With fresh fish, coconut and abundant spices, the food here is richly flavoured and deeply satisfying.

Fort Cochin is the most charming town in Kerala. Once ruled by the Portuguese, Dutch and British, it retains a distinct European flavour. The town’s rich history as a spice port makes it a great place to shop for spices and souvenirs. You can also catch a Kathakali performance, this traditional dance form, born in Kerala in the 16th century, is a cultural highlight. Along the seafront, the iconic Chinese fishing nets are operated by teams of fishermen who haul in their catch and sell it fresh on the beach. It’s the perfect place to sit with a fresh coconut juice, watching the sea and nets at work.

Beyond the backwaters, the hills of the Western Ghats hold tea plantations, colonial-style houses and winding trekking paths. The landscape is ideal for scenic walks, passing through verdant plantations and small villages. Eravikulam National Park is a great hiking spot and home to southern India’s highest peak, Anamudi, at 1,700 metres. The park also shelters endangered Nilgiri Tahr and several rare bird and butterfly species.

For beach lovers, Kerala offers a laidback coastal experience. Smaller beach towns provide a relaxed atmosphere, where traditional fishing methods are still used and life moves at an easy pace. Stretch out in a hammock, wander along golden sands, and soak up the peace.
