Caño Cristales

Often referred to as the “River of Five Colours,” Caño Cristales is one of Colombia’s most enchanting natural wonders. Located in the remote Serranía de la Macarena National Park, this striking river appears to run red, green, yellow, blue and black during certain times of the year, thanks to the aquatic plant Macarenia clavigera, which blooms in vibrant colours between June and November.

This natural phenomenon transforms the river into a surreal, kaleidoscopic landscape that has to be seen to be believed. Cascading waterfalls, natural pools and smooth rock formations add to the river’s dreamlike quality, making it one of the most photogenic sites in the country.

Despite its fame, Caño Cristales remains wonderfully preserved due to controlled access and sustainable tourism practices. Guided hikes through the surrounding savannah and rainforest allow travellers to experience the area’s rich biodiversity, including monkeys, colourful birds and rare orchids.
