The Costa Verde, or Green Coast, stretches along the coastal regions of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro states, from Santos in the south to Búzios in the north. It’s an area of lush rainforests, mountains, wildlife, beaches, and the sparkling Atlantic Ocean.
The three most popular destinations are Paraty, Ilha Grande, and Búzios, each offering a unique experience. Equidistant from Rio and São Paulo, Paraty is a beautifully preserved colonial town and UNESCO World Heritage site. Its cobbled streets, pastel buildings, and churches lie between rainforest and ocean. Paraty Bay is perfect for boat trips to secluded coves, and activities range from whitewater rafting to paddleboarding and visiting cachaça distilleries. Boutique hotels and private villas make it ideal for families, and the town hosts FLIP, Latin America’s largest literary festival.
Ilha Grande is accessible by a short drive and boat ride. It has a more rustic, backpacker vibe but offers stunning beaches and peaceful bays. Nearby, areas around São Sebastião, Ilhabela, and Angra dos Reis feature luxury boutique hotels and sought-after villas, especially popular during Christmas and New Year.
East of Rio lies Búzios, a former fishing village turned stylish beach resort with a Mediterranean feel. With beaches like Ferradura and Geribá, it offers both calm waters and surfing spots. The town’s lively Rua das Pedras is packed with shops, bars, and restaurants, making Búzios ideal for a vibrant end to your trip. For peace and charm, choose Paraty. For nightlife and energy, opt for Búzios. Either is a perfect way to end your Brazilian adventure.
