Expansive salt pans offering a stark contrast to Botswana’s wetter ecosystems.
Stretching across northeastern Botswana, Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans form one of the largest salt pan systems on earth, a vast and otherworldly landscape shaped by an ancient lake that long ago receded. Today, shimmering white pans, scattered grasslands, and clusters of baobab trees create a setting that feels both stark and strangely beautiful, where horizons seem to dissolve into the sky.
For much of the year, the pans lie dry and almost lunar in appearance, offering a sense of scale and silence that is unlike anywhere else in Africa. In Nxai Pan, open plains support grazing herds, while the iconic Baines’ Baobabs stand as silent sentinels, adding a sense of history and permanence to the landscape. When the rains arrive, the transformation is dramatic, with shallow waters drawing zebra and wildebeest in large numbers, followed by predators that track these seasonal movements.
Birdlife flourishes during the wetter months, as flamingos and other water-dependent species gather on the temporary lakes, bringing colour and movement to the otherwise pale expanses. Activities here often go beyond traditional game drives, with opportunities to walk across the pans, sleep under vast star-filled skies, or witness the stark beauty of the environment in near-total solitude.
